Theodore Swift: Coulees, Curiosity, and Coming HomeI'm Theodore Swift. Born and raised in Lethbridge, Alberta — that windswept slice of the prairies where the coulees cut deep into the earth. I'm a writer now, focused on the intersection of honest human connection and sustainable living. My background? Let's just say I've spent a lot of years studying what makes people tick, emotionally and physically. I run the EcocopyDating project over at ecocopywriter.com. It’s where I get to merge my two worlds: helping eco-conscious folks navigate the wilds of modern dating, all while writing about the place that shaped me.These days, you'll find me camped out at a coffee shop on 5th Street South, or maybe hiking the trails in the river valley, turning over ideas for my next article. The project? It's about Lethbridge, really. About seeing your hometown with fresh eyes and understanding why the people here connect the way they do. It’s a slow burn, this work. But most good things are.Look, I'm not here to sell you a perfect life. I've made a mess of things more times than I can count. That's probably why I got into sexology in the first place. I wanted to understand my own spectacular failures. The short version: I've been a counselor, a workshop facilitator, a guy who spent a decade listening to strangers talk about their most intimate hopes and fears. It taught me that competence isn't about having all the answers. It's about being willing to sit in the uncomfortable questions with someone. And maybe... that's what I bring to the table now. A willingness to not look away.I came into the world on June 17th, 1982, at the old St. Michael's Hospital on 9th Street South. My parents still talk about that summer — the constant smell of sun-baked earth from the tobacco fields out by Raymond, the way the chinook winds would sweep through and melt the snow in hours, even in June it could surprise you. My dad, a high school biology teacher, used to joke I was born with the coulee dust in my lungs. The town was smaller then, quieter. You could hear the trains from the CPR yards for miles, a low rumble that felt like the city's own heartbeat. I don't remember it, obviously. But it's part of the story I tell myself about who I am.Lethbridge isn't just a dot on a map for me. It's a topography of memory. The coulees aren't just a geological feature; they're my backyard, my childhood playground, my first real lesson in ecology. You learn to read the land here. The different grasses, the way the light hits the sandstone in the evening. It teaches you patience, observation. And that bled into everything. My work at the University of Lethbridge, where I studied psychology, was just a formal extension of that. I'd spend hours in the library there, reading Kinsey, then walk home through the coulees, trying to square textbook theory with the raw, messy reality of the landscape. It's where I learned that connection — to a place, to a person — is something you have to actively cultivate. It doesn't just happen. You have to show up, again and again, even when the wind is howling.Growing up here... it was interesting. My teenage years were spent skateboarding on the concrete outside the old Courthouse, or down by the Galt Gardens, trying to look cool and failing miserably. There was this undercurrent of, I don't know, *isolation* in a prairie city back then. It made you introspective. It also made you crave connection. My first real experiments in, well, everything, happened in the back of a beat-up truck parked overlooking the High Level Bridge, the lights of the city spread out below like a promise. Later, my work with the Lethbridge Sexual Health Centre, right there on 4th Avenue, felt like a natural extension of those years. Taking that raw curiosity and giving it a framework, a place to be useful. We ran workshops, support groups. Tried to create a space where people could talk about desire and identity without shame. It was messy, sometimes heartbreaking, often hilarious work. You learn a lot about human nature when you're knee-deep in other people's relationship drama. You learn a lot about your own, too.So yeah. The city I write about for the EcocopyDating project — it's not a tourist brochure version. It's the Lethbridge I know. The one with the brutalist architecture of the University Centre, the quiet dirt paths along the Oldman River, the wind that can drive you crazy or clear your head. I write about how growing up in a place defined by extreme weather and wide-open spaces shapes your approach to partnership. Maybe you're more resilient. Maybe you're more likely to seek shelter. I don't have the answers. But I've got a lot of questions, a lot of memories, and a stubborn belief that we can build relationships that are as sustainable and grounded as the ecosystems we live in. That's the thread, I think. From St. Michael's to the coulees to a website about eco-dating. It's all just trying to understand how we fit into this place, and into each other.
