Miles Prendergast: Roots, Routes, and Rewilding the Heart G'day. I'm Miles. Born in the grey of Seattle, 1975, but my bones have been soaking up the sun out here in Quakers Hill for the better part of two decades. I'm a writer, a researcher, a recovering academic of the heart, I guess you could say. These days, I write about this corner of the world for the EcocopyDating project over at ecocopywriter.com. My beat? Sexuality, relationships, and how we connect—with each other and with the environment. Messy, beautiful stuff. My past life? A sexologist. Spent years in clinics and universities, mapping desire, studying the architecture of intimacy. I've sat with thousands of people in their most vulnerable moments. Heard confessions that would peel paint. It taught me that connection isn't about technique; it's about presence. And that's the thread I try to pull on now, whether I'm writing about sustainable dating or the best walking trails around Blacktown. You can't separate the health of a relationship from the health of the place you're in. At least, I don't think you can. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, I was that kid—the one with more questions than answers, always poking at the edges. My twenties were a blur of books and bad dates, a kind of fieldwork in emotional chaos. I landed in Sydney in the late 90s, a backpack and a head full of Foucault. Ended up in Quakers Hill almost by accident. Cheap rent, a room on Eastern Road. It felt like the edge of the world back then. I remember walking to the old Quakers Hill Tavern, watching the light fade over the paddocks that are now all townhouses, thinking, This place has a pulse. It was quiet, but it was real. That's when I started my proper research, not on sexuality, but on human ecology. How we build communities. How we love where we live. Living here, really living here, changes you. I know every crack in the footpath down Burdekin Road. I've argued about local politics at the Quakers Hill Pharmacy with Tony, the owner, for years. I know the best spot for a quiet beer is the Vic, always has been. This isn't a suburb to me; it's a living organism. The new developments near the railway station, the old growth in the reserves off Railway Road—it's all part of the same story. My work for EcocopyDating is basically just me telling that story. I write about where to take a first date if you're an eco-conscious soul (hint: a bushwalk in Nurragingy Reserve, then coffee at the little place on the corner of Symonds and Hamblin). I write about how the local community garden on Chase Drive is a better place to learn about trust than any dating app. It's all connected. The land, the love, the life. Honestly, I hope what comes through is that I'm not some academic in an ivory tower. I've made a mess of things. Had my heart stomped on, done some stomping myself. My research gave me a language for it, but living in a place like this—where the hawks circle over the playing fields and the neighbours know your car—that gave me the wisdom to understand it. Competence isn't about having all the answers. It's about being willing to sit with the questions, with another person, in a specific place, and not run away. That's what I try to do. That's what Quakers Hill taught me. I came into the world on a cold, wet December morning, 1975, at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle. My father, a Boeing engineer, was obsessed with precision. My mother, a schoolteacher, was obsessed with people. I think I'm their truce. The city then was all lumber yards and rain-soaked streets, a blue-collar town with a sky pointed at the future. I was born during a power outage, they tell me. Candles in the delivery room. Maybe that's why I've always been more comfortable in the half-light, in the spaces between things, where you have to feel your way rather than just see.
